Why Travel? A Reflection on the Power of Exploration

Reading this piece I wrote years ago (13/12/2015) filled me with a profound sense of nostalgia and tenderness. It reminded me why travel has always been such a meaningful part of my life. That’s why I decided to republish it today — to inspire anyone wondering why it’s worth stepping outside their comfort zone and exploring the world.

Why Do People Travel? A Question Worth Asking

Some people ask me why I want to travel the world, even though, to them, “you’re a girl and that sounds like a pretty bad idea.” But for me, traveling has always been a source of growth and discovery that goes beyond age or gender.

The truth is, traveling requires one thing above all else: being smart. It doesn’t matter if you’re young or old, male or female. The world is full of wonders, and the people you meet along the way can be truly incredible. However, travel — especially solo backpacking — isn’t easy. It demands preparation, awareness and an open mind.

The Freedom and Joy of Solo Travel

I love traveling alone for many reasons. Despite being solo, I often meet so many people that I’m rarely truly alone during my journeys. Traveling has been the most incredible experience of my life, and I continue to do it whenever I can.

I encourage all my friends — especially those hesitant because of language barriers or budget concerns — to give it a try. Cheap travel doesn’t have to mean uncomfortable travel: hostels and sharing platforms like Couchsurfing open doors to authentic experiences at a low cost. I’ll share more about these in a future post, but for now, let’s get straight to the core question: Why travel the world?

Travel as a Path to Self-Discovery

A few months ago, I thought this question was strange — as if the answer should be obvious. After all, traveling opens your eyes and changes you, making you a kinder, more compassionate person. For me, travel is a way to find my own path and understand who I truly am.

Yet, once I started traveling solo I realized many of my friends didn’t share this passion or understand my excitement about the people I met and the experiences I had. I was sad at first, but then I understood: you can’t truly grasp the power of travel until you live it.

Meeting People Who Change Your Life

Travel isn’t just about places; it’s about connections. Travelers become lifelong friends, often in unexpected ways. For instance, I met Renae, a girl from Texas, in Naples last summer. We connected so deeply that I’m sure she’ll be at my wedding someday. I call her my “sister” now, though I never expected that the first time we met.

Such encounters broaden your mind and push you to leave your comfort zone, forcing you to see life from refreshing perspectives. These experiences help you develop skills you never knew you had.

Dreams Become Reality on the Road

When you travel, your dreams start to come true. If you’ve always wanted to explore the world, don’t wait. Leave now! You’ll meet fascinating travelers from all over, encounter unique locals, and taste food you’ve never imagined.

I still remember my first solo trip in July 2014. I was shy arriving in Dublin, but within hours, I felt at home. I stayed for over three weeks with a Couchsurfing host named Will and his family, who treated me like a daughter. That experience changed everything. Travel isn’t about being a tourist — it’s about living like a local.

Overcoming Fear and Embracing New Challenges

Travel has taught me bravery and confidence. When I was in Naples, my friend Ryan encouraged me with, “You can do it, Claudia! Do it!” I wanted to be like him — happy, generous, kind, smart, and brave. Now, I’m doing it every day. Traveling alone long distances no longer scares me. Last summer changed my life.

You can do it too. Don’t say, “I can’t, it’s impossible.” Dream big, stay curious, stay focused, and you’ll discover that the world is closer than you think.

Returning Home: The Bittersweet End of a Journey

Completing a trip brings satisfaction but can also trigger a “post-travel blues” feeling, leaving you lost in the routine of daily life. Don’t worry if you feel that way. Take a deep breath. I’m still figuring out my next step, but I know that travel has shaped who I am today.

Travel also gives you the energy and inspiration to take on new challenges, wherever in the world you may find yourself next.

Final Thought: Why Travel?

Why travel? Simply because you can.
